Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) L-1 Practice Exam

A failing alternator loses the ability to recharge the battery and power the vehicle’s electrical system. In an emergency vehicle, where high electrical loads are common from lights, radios, and other equipment, the battery becomes the primary source of power and starts to discharge. The most recognizable signs are dimmed lights or gauges, a battery charging/warning light, frequent dead batteries, and voltage that rises and falls with load. These symptoms point to charging issues rather than ignition or fuel problems.

Engine misfire isn’t a typical sign of an alternator problem. Misfires usually come from ignition or fuel delivery issues, not from the charging circuit. Increased fuel efficiency would not be expected, and a stiff brake pedal is unrelated to the alternator’s function.
